Background to U3A

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international organisation although each local group is an independent unit, self-supporting and non-profit making.

We receive no funding from any official bodies and are non-political.

The U3A is a self-help study group aimed at people aged 50 and over who are interested in developing new skills in a friendly environment.

It is a university in the original sense of the word – people coming together to learn.

It is an entirely voluntary organisation which relies on the efforts of its members to keep running. None of its officers receive payment and the tutors & co-ordinators  receive only a small honorarium.

We have nearly 600 members who come from a wide area. We provide a mixed programme of educational, creative, physical and social activities. Keeping mind and body active maintains an enthusiasm for living and promotes healthy ageing.

Volunteers act as tutors and co-ordinators, thus enabling us to keep costs low and to offer such a wide variety of subjects. In some classes, members may be asked to contribute to the cost of materials used in the sessions.

Our U3A cannot exist without you the member; please pass the word among your friends and acquaintances – or anyone you chance to chat to!
