Tutors Richard Grylls & Max Rathmell (New Class)
Five illustrated talks from January to March, followed by discussion, about the fascinating industrial and transport history of the Spen Valley, where enterprising local people invented and developed new processes and products. We will look at the mills, at card clothing, textiles, engineering, cars, motorbikes, trams and trains. We will discover how trains and later, trams, affected the scenery and people’s lives in the valley. We will see how companies prospered and how as a result, some wealthy families contributed to the civic, educational and cultural life of the Spen Valley.
